Early Morning Departure from Moshi

Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi. After meeting your professional mountain guide, you’ll drive approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park.

Upon arrival at Londorossi Gate, complete the necessary park registration before continuing in a 4WD vehicle through the mountain forest to Morum Barrier Gate, the starting point of your hike.

Along the drive, you’ll enjoy beautiful scenery, mountain forests, and your first spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Begin Your Shira Plateau Hike

At approximately 3,400 metres above sea level, your Kilimanjaro Shira Plateau Day Hike begins.

Unlike the lower rainforest routes, the Shira Plateau welcomes hikers with wide-open moorlands, volcanic terrain, giant heathers, colourful alpine plants, and dramatic landscapes formed by ancient volcanic activity.

The trail is relatively gentle, making it suitable for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness, although the higher altitude makes the experience both exciting and rewarding.

As you hike across the plateau, your guide will explain the fascinating geology of Mount Kilimanjaro, its unique ecosystems, and the history of the various climbing routes that cross this incredible mountain.

Reach Cathedral Point Viewpoint

One of the highlights of the day is reaching Cathedral Point, one of the most scenic viewpoints on the Shira Plateau.

Weather permitting, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Kibo Peak, distant glaciers, Mount Meru, and the endless plains of northern Tanzania.

Spend time relaxing, taking photographs, and appreciating the peaceful mountain surroundings while enjoying your packed picnic lunch.

The fresh alpine air and dramatic scenery make this one of the most memorable locations on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Wildlife and Mountain Flora

Although Kilimanjaro is famous for climbing, the mountain is also home to fascinating wildlife and unique vegetation.

Depending on the season, you may encounter mountain birds, small mammals, and a variety of endemic alpine plants adapted to the harsh mountain environment.

Your guide will point out interesting species and explain how life survives in this high-altitude ecosystem.

Descend and Return to Moshi

After spending time exploring the plateau and enjoying the magnificent scenery, begin your descent back to Morum Barrier Gate.

Your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back through the national park to Londorossi Gate before continuing the drive to Moshi.

Arrive back at your accommodation in the early evening with unforgettable memories of one of Tanzania’s most unique hiking experiences.
