OVERVIEW

This 5-day birdwatching safari in Uganda offers an exciting opportunity to explore two of the country’s most remarkable wildlife areas, the Queen Elizabeth National Park and the lush forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Uganda is widely known as the “Pearl of Africa,” and for bird lovers it is truly a paradise, hosting more than 1,000 bird species across diverse ecosystems including savannahs, wetlands, and tropical forests.

During this safari, you will spend five rewarding days dedicated to birdwatching while also enjoying scenic landscapes and occasional wildlife sightings. Highlights include birding in the Kasenyi plains, a boat cruise along the famous Kazinga Channel, and forest birding in Bwindi home to many Albertine Rift endemic species.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Kampala – Queen Elizabeth National Park & Afternoon Birding

Your safari begins early in the morning at around 7:00 am with a scenic drive from Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a journey of approximately six hours. Upon arrival, check into your lodge and take some time to relax. Later in the afternoon, head out for a birdwatching session around the Katwe area, known for its rich birdlife and beautiful landscapes.

Day 2: Birding in Kasenyi & Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

Begin the day early with tea or coffee before heading to the Kasenyi plains for birdwatching and a game drive. This area is well known for its savannah bird species and raptors, along with sightings of wildlife across the open plains. A picnic breakfast will be enjoyed in the field.

In the afternoon, take a relaxing 3-hour boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, famous for its impressive concentration of birds along the shoreline including pelicans, kingfishers, herons, and many others. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Birding in Ishasha – Transfer to Bwindi

After breakfast, travel to the Ishasha sector for a rewarding morning of birdwatching. This region offers both savannah and wetland habitats due to the nearby Ishasha River. While birding, you may also spot the area’s famous tree-climbing lions resting in fig trees.

Later, continue your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Africa’s most important birding destinations with more than 350 bird species. In the evening, optional community walks can provide additional birdwatching opportunities.

Day 4: Full-Day Birding in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After a briefing at the park headquarters, begin a full-day birdwatching experience along the Mubwindi Waterfalls Trail. Bwindi is home to more than 350 bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics such as the African Green Broadbill, Rwenzori Batis, and Handsome Francolin.

Spend the day exploring the dense forest trails with your expert guide while spotting rare species and enjoying the unique biodiversity of this ancient rainforest. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Bwindi – Kampala

After breakfast, begin the journey back to Kampala. Along the way, stop at the Uganda Equator Crossing for photos and a brief experience standing between the northern and southern hemispheres. Continue to Mbarara for lunch before completing the drive back to Kampala, arriving in the evening and marking the end of your 5-day Uganda birding safari.
