5 Days Marangu Route – Kilimanjaro Climbing

OVERVIEW

5 Days Marangu Route – Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary

The 5 Days Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most classic and comfortable ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike other routes, it provides hut accommodation instead of tents, offering trekkers a more relaxed experience. The Marangu Route is the only path that allows both ascent and descent along the same trail, giving climbers a familiar route with stunning scenery at every turn.

This route is perfect for those seeking a shorter trek without camping while still experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Kilimanjaro’s rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert zones  all leading to the spectacular Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Moshi – Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast with a drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where you’ll register before starting your climb. The trail leads through a lush rainforest filled with moss-covered trees, colorful birds, and playful blue monkeys.

You’ll walk at a gentle pace, adjusting to the altitude, and after about 4–5 hours, arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and an overnight stay. Nearby, you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for views of northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

After breakfast, the trek continues through the last stretch of rainforest before entering the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up to stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding valleys.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon and rest early, as you’ll be waking up around midnight for your summit attempt.

Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–7 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 4: Kibo Hut (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Your summit day begins before dawn. After a light snack, begin your slow, steady climb toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From there, continue along the ridge to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent.

At the summit, you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise over the plains below  an unforgettable reward for your determination. After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for lunch and then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
