The route passes through lush montane forests, alpine meadows, and rugged volcanic landscapes, culminating in a sunrise summit at Socialist Peak with panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Climbing Mount Meru in 3 days is physically demanding, involving steep ascents and long trekking hours, especially on summit day. However, it’s an incredibly rewarding challenge for adventurous travelers.
Altitude: 1,500m (Momella Gate) to 2,514m (Miriakamba Hut)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: ~10 km
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to Momella Gate, the starting point of the Mount Meru trek. After park formalities and a safety briefing, you’ll begin your ascent accompanied by a park ranger (due to wildlife). This day’s trek winds through lush montane forest, where sightings of giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and warthogs are common.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Miriakamba Hut, your accommodation for the night. Enjoy dinner and rest in preparation for a steeper climb tomorrow.
Altitude: 2,514m to 3,570m (Saddle Hut); Optional: 3,820m (Little Meru)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours (to Saddle Hut); 1.5 hours round-trip to Little Meru
Distance: ~8 km + optional 2 km
Today, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging as you ascend through heath and moorland zones. After reaching Saddle Hut, most trekkers rest before a short optional hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for stunning sunset views and acclimatization.
After dinner, it’s early to bed as summit day begins before midnight.
Altitude: 3,570m to 4,566m (summit), descend to 1,500m
Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
Distance: ~20 km
Summit day begins around 2:00 AM. With headlamps and warm gear, you’ll ascend via Rhinoceros Point and Cobra Point, reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise. From the summit, you’ll enjoy 360-degree views, including a spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Miriakamba Hut for lunch, then continue to Momella Gate, where your driver will transfer you back to Arusha.
